Updating Phosphorus Supplementation in Ruminants to Meet the Animal’s Requirement, Reduce Excess Cost, and Reduce Environmental Concerns

چکیده
Phosphorus has been called the "master mineral" because it is involved in most metabolic pathways, is a key component of Adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) which transports chemical energy within cells for energy metabolism, and it is a component of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). “Next to calcium, phosphorus is the most abundant mineral in the body. Approximately 85% of phosphorus in the body can be found in bones and teeth, and roughly 10% circulates in the bloodstream. The remaining phosphorous can be found in cells and tissues throughout the body. Phosphorus helps filter out waste in the kidneys and contributes to energy production in the body by participating in the breakdown of carbohydrates, protein, and fats” (http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/phosphorus-000319.htm).

Feed management practices to reduce manure phosphorus excretion in dairy cattle
Phosphorus (P) is an essential mineral that needs to be supplied in sufficient quantities for maintenance and growth and milk production in dairy cattle. However, over 60% of the P consumed can be excreted in faeces with a potential to cause environmental pollution. Concern over higher levels of P in intensively managed livestock systems has led to legislation such as the Water Framework Direct...
متن کاملThe Possibility for reducing Water Pollution resulting from Concentrated Animal Feeding operations and the impact of Phytase
Poultry, swine, and pre-ruminant calves have limited ability to digest phytate, the storage form of about 80% of total phosphorus in plant-based feedstuffs. The resulting excess phosphorus excretion in manure, upon application to farmlands, can leach into and pollute water bodies. Even so, a 1989 report to EPA on the costeffectiveness of Best Management Practices to reduce non-point phosphorus ...
متن کاملEffects of Reduced Crude Protein and Fiber Supplementation on Nitrogen and Phosphorus Utilization and Availability
In recent years, animal agriculture has been surrounded by concerns of environmental contamination and degradation. To reduce potential environmental hazards, researchers have tried various practices to reduce the amount of nutrients being excreted in swine manure and ammonia emissions from manure contributing to diminishing air quality. To prevent further environmental concerns, diet modificat...
متن کاملEndogenous phosphorus loss in ruminants: A review
Phosphorus (P), a major mineral in animal nutrition is currently a focus of the livestock industry. This is because of its high fecal excretion by livestock and the subsequent environmental pollution, especially in the eutrophication of lakes and surface water. Areas of intensive animal husbandry and dairy farms where P is fed in excess are particularly affected. Ruminants must be fed according...
متن کاملAnimal management to reduce phosphorus losses to the environment.
Water quality in the United States is threatened by contamination with nutrients, primarily nitrogen and phosphorus. Animal manure can be a valuable resource for farmers, providing nutrients, improving soil structure, and increasing vegetative cover to decrease erosion potential. At the same time, application of manure nutrients in excess of crop requirements can result in environmental contami...
